A 16-year-old boy died in Tennessee after he hit a black bear while driving on the night of Saturday, Nov. 23, according to multiple outlets.

Citing Tennessee Highway Patrol, WVLT, WATE and WBIR reported that the boy, whose name was not released, was driving in Campbell County in the northeast part of the state at around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.

A black bear walked out into the road in front of the truck being driven by the boy, who authorities say were not able to get out of the way, per the outlets.

WATE reported that the bear was struck by the front bumper of the pickup truck, which eventually came to an “uncontrolled final rest out of the roadway.”

The passenger, another 16-year-old boy, was injured as a result of the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the highway patrol said, according to WATE.
