Olivia Wilde is sharing what it’s like to be both a mother and a filmmaker.

Speaking at a Wednesday, May 8 event promoting Baby2Baby, the Don’t Worry Darling director-star, 40, tells PEOPLE exclusively that her two kids “are begging me to make something that's not rated R.”

Of all her directorial efforts, including the three she’s now working on, “I have one right now that they can see,” Wilde says with a laugh. With only one age-appropriate option, her son Otis Alexander, 10, and Daisy Josephine, 7, she says, “are like, ‘Mom this is irresponsible!’”

Wilde's upcoming projects in pre-production as a director are Avengelyne, Naughty and Perfect.

“The next few projects I'm directing all have a common theme, which are women who are living without shame,” she tells PEOPLE. “It's interesting — they're three very different movies but it's all about women being empowered.”

Her two kids, whom she shares with ex Jason Sudeikis, will eventually have permission to see the entirety of Wilde’s work on screen and behind the camera. “I do think about the effect they have on my kids,” she says of her projects.

“In the end, I want them to learn from me that everything you do in your life is all a learning process,” she continues. “I wouldn't be the director I am today if I hadn't made all the things I've made. I try to encourage them all the time: You don't have to feel like everything is the greatest thing you've ever done.”

Daisy “wants to be a director, which is so cool," Wilde adds. "She loves music videos. And I grew up loving music videos but we had MTV and VH1 all day long.”

The mother-and-daughter duo, Wilde recalls, “sit and study the direction of, like, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and then direct her own videos. And then we cut them together.”

Asked if Wilde herself ever appears in Daisy’s home movies, she laughs. “No, no, no. She would critique my choreography way too much.”

Wilde appeared alongside Kelly Rowland and Ciara at Los Angeles’ Baby2Baby Headquarters to promote the expansion of the non-profit organization’s maternal health and newborn supply kits. Baby2Baby supports the well-being of women and children in poverty with diapers, clothing and basic necessities.

The Booksmart director tells PEOPLE she’ll be bringing her kids to volunteer with the non-profit.

“They're just at the ages now where they can understand a bit more of the context around why we should be doing this, and know how lucky they were, but how now they can use their good fortune to devote their time," she says.

“With kids, volunteering is such an exciting way for them to feel their own kind of useful power and influence," Wilde adds. "I used to go around with my mom and deliver meals with Meals on Wheels in Washington, D.C. in the winter. And those memories are really formative for me.”
