Authorities in Los Angeles are investigating the drive-by shooting death of up-and-coming professional boxer Mylik Birdsong.

The reigning World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight champion, 31, was reportedly standing outside of a vehicle along with his girlfriend on the city’s south side when another car approached at about 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, a police spokesperson told KTLA-TV."A dark-colored SUV drove by westbound on 87th Street and shot at the victim," an LAPD spokesperson told the outlet. "The victim then ran towards his residence when two suspects from the vehicle started chasing him while shooting at him."

Birdsong, who police say was shot seven times in the chest, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, per KTLA.

Known as King Mylik, the Los Angeles native had a 15-1-1 record, with 10 knock-outs. At the time of his death, he was the reigning World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight champion

In a video posted on his Instagram just a day before his death, Birdsong showed his softer side, sharing that he had recently adopted a Mastiff puppy.

“We got us a good little girl,” he said in part, before joking that the dog had a “big body.”

The boxer’s next fight was set for Oct. 26 against Armenian Gor Yeritsyan on the UFC Fight Pass card.
