‘True Detective’ Star Kali Reis Says Working With Jodie Foster is Like ‘Training Camp With Mike Tyson’

At 60 years old, Jodie Foster has gracefully accepted her new place in the industry as a mentor, offering her wisdom as a seasoned veteran to the next generation of actors navigating Hollywood.

“The part they don’t tell you when you turn 60 is that it’s so much fun because it’s not your time anymore. It’s someone else’s time, and the best part of getting older is realizing that you actually have something to give back. You have something to contribute, to help support other people’s performances, and to help spur other voices that haven’t been heard before,” said Foster.

It’s a sentiment her “True Detectives” co-stars echoed on the red carpet on Tuesday night (which comes days after Foster’s comments regarding Gen-Z’s work ethic made headlines), telling Variety that they earned master-class in acting from the “Nyad” star.

Kali Reis, who stars alongside Foster in the new season, shared part of their working relationship comparing it with an analogy that fits her boxing background.

“It was like being at a training camp with Mike Tyson in ’86, in his prime. She’s a legend in the game. She’s so intelligent, so collaborative, supportive,” said Reis. “She had a directorial eyes. She had her actor eye and she was just such a great partner to work with.”

is added: “Her art and her work speaks for itself but she’s just an amazing person. I went in having this goal, wanting to tell the story, but I left with a friend and such a mentor.”

The best advice Foster could give to her younger counterparts, she says, “I’m just like, relax, it’s gonna be fine. Don’t worry so much. That’s usually my way.”

Foster stars and executive produces on the fourth season of the HBO drama, which follows Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) as they attempt to solve the mysterious disappearance of the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska.

Season 4 of “True Detective” premieres on Jan. 14.
