Uber Eats' star-studded Super Bowl commmercial, first shared on Feb. 6, faced criticism for a joke about someone having an allergic reaction

Viewers were not nuts for a joke in Uber Eats’s Super Bowl commercial.

The original ad for the food delivery service was posted online on Feb. 6, but the version that aired during the big game on Feb. 11 omitted a peanut allergy joke.

Uber Eats’s Super Bowl 2024 commercial is based on the tagline “Whatever you forget, remember Uber Eats gets groceries.” It includes a series of people forgetting simple things, like Jennifer Aniston not recognizing her Friends costar David Schwimmer, David and Victoria Beckham blanking on her iconic Spice Girls group name and Usher wishing he could do a Super Bowl halftime show right after performing.

One forgetful moment in the ad shared on Feb. 6, which can still be found in an unlisted YouTube video, shows a man eating spoonfuls of peanut butter while his eye swells up and his face breaks out in hives. “There’s peanuts in peanut butter?” he says. “Oh, it’s the primary ingredient.”

The scene includes a warning about food allergies. “Please please please do not forget there are peanuts in peanut butter,” a message -

in small print reads at the bottom of the advertisement.

Last week, the ad faced backlash online for the peanut butter joke. Food Allergy Research & Education reposted the advertisement on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a statement.

“We’re incredibly disappointed by @UberEats’ use of life-threatening food allergies as humor in its Super Bowl ad. The suffering of 33M+ Americans with this condition is no joke. Life-threatening food allergy is a disease, not a diet. Enough is enough,” the post said.

On Feb. 9, the CEO of the non-profit organization, Sung Poblete, shared an update. “I have spoken with Uber, they are very appreciative of FARE's valuable perspective and feedback and have made a change to the ad that will air to the Super Bowl's wide audience, they are editing out the reference to the peanut allergy,” a statement read.

Uber Eats did not respond to PEOPLE’s request to comment.

An updated version of the commercial was shared on Uber Eats’s YouTube channel on Sunday morning and the commercial that aired during the Super Bowl did not include the peanut joke. In its place, there is a scene of someone forgetting how to sit in a chair.
